MTB trail ability level guide — single black and double black grade requirements for Onward MTB holiday camps

Practice and racing can feel like two different worlds.

These camps are built to close that gap, recreating a competitive race weekend at Skyline so riders can work on their own race processes, free from the pressure of results.

These camps promote personal growth, not comparative results. Without the pressure of racing against others, riders are free to focus on their own processes, experiment, and find their personal best with calm confidence

We cover everything that shapes performance on race day: riding, mental preparation, physical readiness and equipment. Riders leave with a clearer understanding of how to find their best performance, and the confidence to do it consistently.

This is aimed at experienced DH riders comfy racing on single black (grade 5) and double black (grade 6) trails but want to refine their race processes.

Need to knows:

  • 2 days of riding from 10am to 4pm at Skyline.

  • Day 1 - track walk (TBC), practice, seeding.

  • Day 2 - Practice, final runs.

  • Strictly limited to 6 riders.

  • Riders must be on downhill bikes - enduro bikes are not suitable.

IS THIS CAMP RIGHT FOR YOUR RIDER?

BEFORE YOU BOOK

These are advanced performance camps. To get the most out of them and to keep everyone safe, riders need to meet the ability requirements below.

RIDER IS READY:

  • Rides single black (grade 5) trails with good technique, control and speed - not just getting down them, but riding them well.
e.g. Armageddon, El Gato, Bubba, KY

  • Has spent real time on double black (grade 6) trails and can ride them with control, even if technique isn't fully dialed yet.
    e.g. Grundy, Fundy, Ants, Hobbit

  • Is on a downhill bike and has (or can get) a valid Skyline lift pass.

  • Is motivated, coachable and ready to focus on their own performance.

NOT SUITABLE IF…

  • Still working towards grade 5, or single black trails are still a real challenge.

  • Little or no time spent on double black trails - these camps build on that foundation, not replace it.

  • On an enduro or trail bike - downhill bike is mandatory, no exceptions.

  • Looking for a first structured coaching experience.

NOT SURE IF YOUR RIDER IS READY?

Contact us before booking - Please be honest with where your rider is at. We'd rather have a quick conversation than the wrong rider on the wrong program.
